TAKIPMATA

In this week’s entry, we will feature a literary piece by Brian Vee titled “TAKIPMATA”. We will review it and discuss on how it has the potential to be a World Literature. TAKIPMATA according to Vee, is a secret literary piece that he only performs on his gigs. However, in this time of pandemic wherein large gathering such as gigs are prohibited, Brian decided to upload TAKIPMATA and his other works online in order for people to keep on hearing his performance and have access to his works. Takipmata in English is Eyelids, the body part you use to shield your eyes from the outside world when you need rest or simply blink to moisten your eyes.

In Vee’s piece, he used eyelids as a symbolization of God’s love. Wherein, when we close our eyes, amidst the darkness we see, is the opportunity that God gave us to close our eyes and rest for a bit and gather our strength before continuing to fight our battles.

Dahil minsan, kailangan mo lang magpahinga.

Para kinabukasan, makita mo ang mundo. Gamit ang bagong mga mata.

The line that struck me the most in this literary piece, is when he said that the reason why I am hearing him now is because of the hope God gave me when I am fighting my battles. He also said that whatever you are experiencing now, all you may need is rest in order to see a new world with a new pair of rested eyes.

Takipmata has the potential to be a World Literature from being a Pop Literature due to its relatable message, not just for the Filipinos but also for the entire world whatever their ethnicity may be. There is no time to be complacent, to believe that we are incapable of conquering whatever obstacles life throws at us since life is so limited. As the poem suggests, we must continue to fight our battles and rest when required because one day there will be no next time wherein, we will no longer be able to regain our strength and open our eyes once more. Brian Vee’s literary piece is great even if you don’t belong in a certain religion. Even though the main theme is God’s love we can still use it in a non-religious way thus transcending beyond its religious barriers. This literary piece can be a classic due to its message. When heard, it may bring inspiration and motivation to people fighting their toughest battles and already thought of giving up.
