“Love is war, I am your soldier” - Elijah Montefalco, Until He Returned
Have you ever experienced falling in love with another person? But, what if the person you love is related to you by blood? And the worst part of it is that you grew up together as a cousin.
I first read this trilogy when I was 11 years old. Those times where Wattpad was an escape place for junior high school students. Those times when I thought this story only talks about love and incest, without realizing that this has other vital notes to offer. I reread it this year– I am 19 years old already, and trust me when I say this work can be potential world literature, and I will discuss why.
Until trilogy is a romance story from Wattpad composed of three books, Until He Was Gone, Until He Returned, and Until Forever. Klare Desteen Montefalco Ty and Elijah Riley Montefalco are the two main characters. They grew up together as cousins living in the same city, fell in love with each other, and were both disowned and opposed by their families only to found out that one of them was a child out of wedlock.
If you like reading Colleen Hoover’s books such as It Ends With Us, All Your Perfects, and November 9, and you want a Filipino version, then, Jonaxx’s books are perfect for you. Jonah Mae Pacalla, also known as Jonaxx/Queen J in the world of Wattpad, published the first book of the trilogy on January-March 2014. The story became famous mainly on girl teens because of the “kilig” factor that it gives to its readers, especially from the Jonaxx boys (male main and supporting characters) that we think we wouldn’t forget.
I also like that the author did not use “too cheesy” words for the characters’ dialogues, making it more realistic and not too cliche considering that this is a fictional story. You wouldn’t get confused by its transitions, unlike other stories from the same platform. Some readers call Jonaxx the “Transition Queen” because you wouldn’t notice that the scenes you are reading have changed. She also used real-life locations in her region including Cagayan de Oro, Davao City, Centrio Mall, Limketkai Mall, Marco Polo Hotel, and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan.
While it is apparent that the central theme of the Until Trilogy is about love and incest, here are the other issues that were discussed:
Dealing with Toxic Family Member
There is still at least one family member who would pick the family’s reputation over their own family. They are willing to sacrifice their loved ones to protect their businesses and the names they have built over the past decades. Some of the old family members in this story are too toxic and selfish to deal with because:
They knew that Klare was not a real Montefalco in the first place and that they hid it for 18 years.
They gave her a hard time making her choose if her family or happiness.
They disagree with Klare meeting her biological father because they believe it will only influence her to leave and forget the family that guided and protected her from the beginning.
Whether we admit it or not, the last words and decisions will always come from the family’s father– at least in this story. Even if the mother and all the children don’t concur with the particular choice, once the father says it, they are forced to do and follow it. The story shows that patriarchy effectuates negative impacts, such as children being rebels to feel free and self-sufficient (in the case of Elijah). Other topics like Filipino-Chinese Culture and Relation were also highlighted in the trilogy.
